Horn of Plenty Food Drive

You can Help Feed Pittsburg and Crawford County! We all know that people are starving in Africa. But did you know that people are hungry right here in Pittsburg, Kansas? There are children who go to bed hungry right here at home. But you can do something about it.

A City-Wide Food Drive is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, September 27, 2009 from 1:00pm-5:00pm. On that day, volunteers will comb all the neighborhoods of Pittsburg and Frontenac, collecting non-perishable food items for Wesley House. All citizens are encouraged to place non-perishable food items in sacks outside their doors by 1:00pm, so volunteers can come by and need not ring door bells.

We are calling this the "Horn of Plenty Food Drive" because we know that the community of Pittsburg/Frontenac is truly blessed with "plenty." We have an abundance of caring people, businesses and organizations that care about this community and care about their neighbors who are struggling in these difficult times. We are setting a modest goal of collection 10,000 non-perishable food items, though I believe we can do so much more to help feed our friends and neighbors right here in Pittsburg, through the Wesley House.

Wesley House is a local non-profit agency supported by many churches and volunteers in Pittsburg. It serves as the food pantry for the community, collecting food and distributing it to help needy families in Crawford County. With our present economic situation, we must focus on basic needs for a significant number of our fellow citizens and their children.

We need 40 volunteer groups to collect food on the 27th, bring it to Wesley House and join the celebration with live music, refreshments and prizes for all volunteers. If you, or your organization would like to volunteer, call Kevin Arensman, 231-1430. Rewards are many for spending a Sunday afternoon working for this good cause!

We thank you!
